Boring effects are made by a special device (borers) on the Schiffli machine which is used to puncture the spanned fabric as required, to form holes in the fabric
Embroidery Borers
- Borers are made of steel
- Borers available in 12%, 13%, 15% grinding and Perfecta and Hinkelmann grinding:
- Generally, 13% grinded borers are used
- For fine boring holes, 12% grinded borers are used
- 15% grinded borers are used for large borings
- The distance between needle and borers: on Lasser machines 18mm others 20mm
- Do not touch the borers on grinded borer tips, they might get rusty
- Borers can be reused several times; if they are blunt they can be exchanged and grinded again. In this case, it is recommendable to sharpen the whole set of borers. In order to avoid irregular boring holes (bores get thinner by each grinding process) do not use the grinded and blunt borers on the same machine simultaneously.
- Adjustment of borer depth during the punching process of on the machine, boring depth adjustment positions 1-13, positions 6 is the basic position. The smaller the value, the smaller the borer depth. Fine adjustment is possible.

Borer Regulation
Borer has to be regulated after each exchange in order to avoid yarn breakage while boring and irregularities of the boring holes, according to the following instructions:
- Put cambric (kind of cotton fabric) on the machine and tighten the fabric as usual
- Remove front and the shuttle yarn
- Make 5 to 10 stitches without frame movement until a small hole is visible in the fabric
- Move frame (18mm for Lasser or 20mm for others) downwards, borers are now situated directly in front of the needle hole
- Move borers forward until they almost touch the fabric
- By using the borer regulation tool, bring all borers into centric position vis-a-vis the hole
- Borer regulation should be carried out by one single person to avoid irregularities
